There is nothing more exciting than a player rushing through the pitch, dribbling the ball between your feet, and lining up a shot to win the game. You kick, the ball zips past the goalie, and you win the match. It’s Zidane scoring a left-volleyed winner in the 2002 Champions League. These are the moments that soccer players across the world dream of, but they don’t happen in a vacuum.
These moments come from teams that have a clear identity and way of playing. Different clubs and academies create systems that enable their players to develop in very specific ways. At Madrid Euro Soccer Academy (MESA), we understand that every player is unique. That’s why we’re putting emphasis on that uniqueness for our 2024-2025 game model. Our coaching staff takes note of each player’s abilities, adjusting our tactical approaches to maximize their strengths. This results in a flexible system, but one thing is non-negotiable—maximal effort. Every player is expected to give 100% in all phases of the game. Discipline, effort, and creativity are the traits that will unlock a player’s full potential.
Vertical Football: Mastering Possession and Control
One of the characteristics that sets MESA’s offensive philosophy apart is our commitment to vertical football. Both the U-16 and U-19 teams will build their game around mastering possession and control in order to dominate the flow of the game. This focuses on circulating the ball and occupying space effectively.
Our teams are trained to execute quick, forward passes while maintaining control of the ball.
By overloading one side of the pitch, we create opportunities to quickly switch play and exploit weaknesses in the opponent's defense. This approach not only keeps the opposing team on their toes but also encourages MESA players to stay alert and adaptable, recognizing and seizing the right moments to launch an attack.
We also stress quick transitions. When the ball is lost, the priority is to regain that possession immediately. The effort our teams put into controlling the ball fosters a winning mentality, requiring both mental and physical resilience from our players.
Creativity Within Structure
At MESA, we expect our players to demonstrate their own creativity. While structure and discipline form the foundation of our game model, players are given the freedom to think outside the box and find innovative solutions on the field. Guided by our framework, MESA players are given the room to become the protagonists of the game, driving it forward with their imagination and skill.
This balance between creativity and structure is designed to prepare players for real competition on the pitch. We train them to adapt to changing situations during matches, making decisions that require a good understanding of the game while also responding to the challenges in front of them. Through small-sided games, exercises, game-like practice and coaching, MESA’s young athletes improve their decision-making, problem-solving, and adaptability—all critical traits for the complete modern soccer player.
We’re pushing the attacking approach tempo for the 2024-2025 season. By focusing on individual characteristics, mastering possession, and prioritizing creativity within our game model, MESA builds players that are tactically astute, creative, disciplined and resilient.
By giving their all on the field and embracing the academy’s philosophy, our players can thrive in the modern soccer world. Their future looks bright.
